How to improve your website’s SEO? Follow these tips to improve your search engine optimization (SEO) and watch your website rise to the top of the search engine results page (SERP) rankings.

1. Publish relevant, authoritative content

We believe that on-page SEO is the key to improving your search engine success on Google and other search engines. Quality, authoritative, authentic content is the number one driver of search engine rankings, and there’s no substitute for quality content—especially when it comes to SEO marketing. Quality content created specifically for your target audience increases website traffic, thereby increasing your website's authority and relevance. Perfect your online writing skills and demonstrate your authority as an authority on the subject you write about.

keywords

Identify and target a specific keyword phrase for each authoritative content page on your website. Think about how your readers might search for this particular page using the following search terms:

  • Online Master of Engineering Management

  • What is biomedical engineering?

  • Title IX Educational Resources

  • Photographing the Northern Lights

  • How to apply for scholarships?

  • When is the FAFSA deadline?

  • What is the difference between engineering and engineering technology?

multiple keyword phrases

It’s difficult for a web page to rank on search engines for multiple keyword phrases —unless those phrases are very similar. A page might be able to rank both 'biomedical engineering jobs' and 'biomedical engineering careers.' It is unlikely that a page will rank for 'student affairs' and 'dean of students' or 'sex discrimination' and 'violence reporting procedures' at the same time.

If you want your website to rank for multiple keyword phrases, you will need to create a separate web page for each target keyword phrase.

Place keywords

Once you've chosen a keyword phrase for a given page, consider the following questions:

  1. Can I use part or all of a keyword phrase in the page URL (by using keywords in a folder)?

    1. Remember characters to avoid in URLs

  2. Can I use some or all of my keyword phrases in the page title?

  3. Can I use some or all of my keyword phrases in page titles and subtitles?

Answering to these questions yes can improve your search engine rankings. However, be natural and user-friendly. For example, you don't want the word 'Project' to appear three or more times in the URL, nor do you want the phrase Northern Lights to appear repeatedly in the page title and in Readability and usability still trump SEO.each title.

content

In addition to page URLs, titles, and headings, content has a huge impact on search engine rankings. Optimizing content is often called 'on-page SEO' or 'on-page optimization'. Repeat your keyword phrase several times throughout the page - once or twice in the opening and closing paragraphs, and two to four times in the rest of the content. Be authoritative. Strategically link to relevant sources and other information - both within your organization's broad website and even to other websites that will be useful to your end users. The content you create is key to improving SEO.

Experience and expertise

When developing content, it's especially important to share your experience and expertise with your target audience. This will help your content stand out, including the vast amount of content created every day by generative artificial intelligence (AI). Experience and expertise build credibility, attract users, and promote long-term success. It aligns with search engines' goals of providing high-quality, relevant information to users and helps enhance online presence and improve SEO performance.

SEO format

Don’t forget to use bold, italics , title tags (especially H1s), and other emphasis tags to highlight these keyword phrases, but don’t overdo it. You still want your language and writing style to read naturally. Never sacrifice good writing for SEO. Good pages are written for users, not search engines. 2. Update content regularly

As you may have noticed, we take content very seriously. The same goes for search engines. Regularly updated content is considered one of the indicators of a website’s relevance, so be sure to keep your content fresh. Review your content according to a defined schedule (e.g. every term) and update as needed. Introduce new sources, make additions and modifications where appropriate, and keep the content fresh for your audience.

blogging

Writing additional content on departmental news blogs that include keyword phrases can also improve search engine rankings. A blog post can even be a brief update on a specific topic you’re targeting. Link relevant CMS web pages and blog posts to each other when it helps readers better understand or learn more about the topic.

3. Metadata

When designing your website, each page There is a space between the tags, which is used to insert metadata or information about the content of the page. If you have a CMS website originally produced by the UMC website team, this data will be pre-populated for you. However, as your website changes over time, it's important for you to check and update metadata.

title metadata

Title metadata is responsible for the page title that appears at the top of your browser window and the title in search engine results. It is the most important metadata on the page.

For those of you with a CMS website, the web team has developed an automated system that creates meta titles for each web page based on your page titles. This increases the importance of using a well-thought-out page title that contains lots of keywords.

Description metadata

Description metadata is a text description that browsers may use in search results for your page. You can think of it as your website's window display - a concise and attractive description to encourage people to enter. A good meta description usually contains two complete sentences. Search engines may not always use your meta descriptions, but it’s important to give them options.

keyword metadata

Keyword metadata is rarely used in statistical search engine rankings. However, you should already know the keyword phrases, so it doesn't hurt to add them to the keyword metadata. You need to include a variety of phrases. Generally speaking, try to keep it around 3-7 phrases, each consisting of 1-4 words. A good example is a 'computer science degree'.

Use alt tags

Always use alt tags or alternative text descriptions to describe your image and video media. They allow search engines to find your pages, which is crucial - especially for those using text-only browsers or screen readers.

Using Schema.org markup

Although Google and other search engines are advanced in understanding content, we have found that implementing Schema.org markup on our web pages (especially publication and modification dates) helps improve our content crawl and re-crawl rates and affects how our content appears on the SERPs.

4. Have a link-worthy website

Pages that are informative, authoritative, unbiased, and help visitors understand what they are interested in are most likely to attract links from other sites, thereby improving your SEO.

Increase your authority and credibility by adding relevant links within your text. Instead of using a 'click here' link, try writing the name of the destination. 'Click here' other than the appended URL has no search engine value , whereas 'Michigan Tech Enterprise Plan' is keyword-rich and will improve your search engine rankings as well as the rankings of the pages you link to. Always use descriptive links via link keywords - not only does it improve SEO, it also adds value to your readers, including those with disabilities or using screen readers.

SEO ranking

Use tools like Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, or Moz to track your SEO rankings. After 4-6 months, you should start to see an increase in search engine impressions. Over the next few months, these impressions should convert into clicks, which you can see in your SEO tools and web analytics.

Now you can further optimize your content to make improvements, increase rankings, and serve your target audience.

5. Optimize for mobile devices and perform technical SEO

Ensure your website is mobile responsive and provides a seamless user experience on smartphones and tablets. Remember to optimize images and other media to load faster on mobile devices. You can use tools like Google's Lighthouse testing tool to test your website's mobile-friendliness.

Work with a strong web development team to implement technical SEO practices. This includes delivering a fast, seamless, intuitive and high-performance user experience. Compress images, minimize HTTP requests, and enable browser caching. Use a concise, organized URL structure to make it easier for users and search engines to navigate. Implement schema markup to enhance rich snippets and improve your content's visibility in search results.

Why prioritize content creation over off-site SEO?

Off-site SEO involves actions taken outside the website to influence search engine rankings. While the SEO community has varying opinions on its importance, we believe that investing time and resources into creating valuable content for your target audience will result in greater benefits for your business.

Quality content establishes your brand as a trustworthy source, attracts and engages users, and encourages return visits and content sharing. While off-site SEO strategies may bring short-term gains, content creation can foster long-term relationships and organic growth. By focusing on relevant content creation, we achieve better scalable results than relying on off-site SEO strategies.
